You may wonder, how is it possible to live without producing any waste/trash. A little town in Japan called Kamikatsu, has been able to accomplish this great task by living with zero waste. Yes! the town produces no waste.

Kamikatsu has a population of roughly 1,500 people. It is a rural area that used to dump waste carelessly or burn household garbage at home like any other town. But later saw that, their reckless behavior created carbon dioxide omissions which harmed their environment and so a decision was made. Kamikatsu had to change. This was the start of their path toward zero waste and a new way of living.

The concept of zero waste started in 2003, when the town created the Zero Waste Declaration. Their definition for Zero Waste was nothing was seen as waste or trash and nothing is thrown away. Everything has to get recycled. And in the beginning, it was very difficult for the people to cope with this new way of living.

Slowly, what was originally this huge burden, became a way of life in Kamikatsu. People began looking at trash differently. Non-organic waste like plastics, cans etc. are classified into categories and reused. Organic waste like food leftovers which is a bit hard to deal with are recycled into compost and that becomes fertilizer for the local farms, which grows the vegetables and crops that are been used in their homes and restaurants.

Though, Kamikatsu is recognized as a small town, their achievement is very inspiring and the world would be a better place if every city could learn from them.
But Kamikatsu is no exceptional in this achievement, San Francisco is also gradually becoming a zero waste city and are aiming to become a Zero Waste City by 2020. Which is pretty ambitious for its huge population but a very awesome and attainable goal.

  1. This is so good.
Zero waste generation is the new deal in this modern era. We have to live and do activities without generating any waste from the onset, and waste which cannot be curtailed from the beginning must be reuse first, before recycling and the last but not ever recommended solution, dumped: I wish we never ever gets to dumping again to keep our environment clean.
